Oscar-winner Director Jonathan Demme directed the live-action in NY. Demme directed Lucky Goldberg, Director, Producer and Cinematographer for ThunderVision Media Ltd (1986-1993) and Founder, President of Hollywood New York International from 1993 - currently, to do the hand-held cinematography to capture the essence of the world's first innovative live concert in the streets, capturing all the colorful and momentous scenes happening between the artists and the people. Lucky had just acquired the latest bleeding-edge technology, a camera and recorder one-piece combination making its inaugural debut in the field. Eventually, Van Zandt, Baker and Schecter would gather an array of artists, described by rock critic Dave Marsh as "the most diverse line up of popular musicians ever assembled for a single session",including DJ Kool Herc, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Ruben Blades, Bob Dylan, Pat Benatar, Herbie Hancock, Ringo Starr and his son Zak Starkey, Lou Reed, Run–D.M.C., Peter Gabriel, Bob Geldof, Clarence Clemons, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Darlene Love, Bobby Womack, Afrika Bambaataa, Kurtis Blow, The Fat Boys, Jackson Browne, Daryl Hannah, Peter Wolf, Bono, George Clinton, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Bonnie Raitt, Hall & Oates, Jimmy Cliff, Big Youth, Michael Monroe, Stiv Bators, Peter Garrett, Ron Carter, Ray Barretto, Gil Scott-Heron, Nona Hendryx, Kashif, Lotti Golden, L. Shankar and Joey Ramone.

These artists also vowed never to perform at Sun City, because to do so would in their minds seem to be an acceptance of apartheid.

Lucky worked with Producer and partner Paul Allen of ThunderVision Media Ltd, based in New York at Kaufman Astoria Studios, which was renovated from the original first Hollywood-style Paramount Studios on the East Coast, in the 1920's, to capture the action. Lucky and Paul introduced a new camera technology to work alongside the 16mm crews, the one-piece camera - Panasonic's ReCam format, for extensive handheld coverage of two days of the artists performing in the streets of Manhattan as well as a rendition of "Sun City" in Manhattan's Washington Square Park. Approximately 150 policemen surrounded the entire park on horseback and foot to secure the area for the performance, which included Steven Van Zandt, Bono, Springsteen, the Fat Boys, Motley Crue, Afrika Bambaataa, Nona Hendryx and many others. Goldberg and Allen went on to shoot Sun City II in Central Park, capturing the politics and music of the spirit of Little Steven's award-winning "Sun City", including interviews with Peter Gabriel, Bono, Harry Belafonte and a supernova of amazing people.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA First Earth Run Day 1

UNITED NATIONS -- Organizers Thursday announced plans for 'The First Earth Run' to mark International Year of Peace with a torch that will be lit at U.N. headquarters, then carried around the globe through 39 nations in 3 months.
About 1,200 communities will be in the path of the run, which is expected to raise money for development and health projects.Individual runners are being invited to carry the torch for six-tenths of a mile in their own or another country along the 14,500-mile route.
American runners are being asked to offer $500 each, with corporate sponsorships augmenting the donations, organizers said.
The torch will begin its journey in New York Sept. 16, the opening day of the 41st session of the U.N. General Assembly designated the 'International Day of Peace.' It will return to New York Dec. 31, according to plans worked out over the past 2 years.
Upon its return to U.N. headquarters, the torch will light an Eternal Flame commemorating the International Year of Peace.
The principal organizer is David Gershon, who set up the 1980 Olympic torch run and other international running events. Participating in the Earth Run are the U.N. Children's Fund, the U.N. Development Program and Jaycees International.
Among backers are marathon runner Joan Benoit and entertainers Ali McGraw, Donna de Varona, John Denver and Cicely Tyson.
U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar said the run 'adds a valuable dimension to efforts worldwide to promote and maintain peace.'
Besides the 'symbolic bringing together of people in the spirit of cooperation,' the organizers said, the First Earth Run will call attention to outstanding local community projects along the worldwide route.
The route of the torch will lead from New York to Canada, cross the Atlantic to Ireland, across Europe to the Soviet Union, the Middle East, Africa, India, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, across the Pacific, up Latin America to California and back to New York.
An International Coordination Office for the First Earth Run has been set up in New York City.
