GOOD MORNING AMERICA First Earth Run Day 1

UNITED NATIONS -- Organizers Thursday announced plans for 'The First Earth Run' to mark International Year of Peace with a torch that will be lit at U.N. headquarters, then carried around the globe through 39 nations in 3 months.
About 1,200 communities will be in the path of the run, which is expected to raise money for development and health projects.Individual runners are being invited to carry the torch for six-tenths of a mile in their own or another country along the 14,500-mile route.
American runners are being asked to offer $500 each, with corporate sponsorships augmenting the donations, organizers said.
The torch will begin its journey in New York Sept. 16, the opening day of the 41st session of the U.N. General Assembly designated the 'International Day of Peace.' It will return to New York Dec. 31, according to plans worked out over the past 2 years.
Upon its return to U.N. headquarters, the torch will light an Eternal Flame commemorating the International Year of Peace.
The principal organizer is David Gershon, who set up the 1980 Olympic torch run and other international running events. Participating in the Earth Run are the U.N. Children's Fund, the U.N. Development Program and Jaycees International.
Among backers are marathon runner Joan Benoit and entertainers Ali McGraw, Donna de Varona, John Denver and Cicely Tyson.
U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar said the run 'adds a valuable dimension to efforts worldwide to promote and maintain peace.'
Besides the 'symbolic bringing together of people in the spirit of cooperation,' the organizers said, the First Earth Run will call attention to outstanding local community projects along the worldwide route.
The route of the torch will lead from New York to Canada, cross the Atlantic to Ireland, across Europe to the Soviet Union, the Middle East, Africa, India, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, across the Pacific, up Latin America to California and back to New York.
An International Coordination Office for the First Earth Run has been set up in New York City.
We were proud participants in filming New York to Washington DC and back to UN Headquarters as ThunderVision Media Ltd., which became Hollywood New York International in 1993.
